Actually I find a piece of polystyrene drawn down the side of the car thats forcing you into the gutter makes a really satisfying sound :D

I had the same problem one year. You can get these "puncture proof" liners that go between the tyre and inner tube. Haven't had a puncture in two years.....yet!

If you are not after road racing then a Schwalbe Unblattbar (Marathon Plus) tyre may be the answer. these have the puncture proof liner bonded inside the tyre, they are a bit heavy, but for commute work they are excellent
