Does anyone get there malt straight from a small brewery? Im thinking of going to ask them. I know they get theres from the maltings in Inverness so another idea was to go straight there, but im not sure if it would be crushed or not coming straight from the maltings? Anyone one any experience of this?

Cheers

I get my malt and hops from a local microbrewery. I am a friend of the family having grown up with the owner's sons, but from what i gather most micro's are happy to order an extra sack of MO or bag of hops. I got a 25kg sack for a tenner, and almost a kilo of lager hops for nothing!

I have two local breweries, one said it was too much trouble sorting out the paperwork for selling me a sack and the other from the excellent Lancaster Brewery http://www.lancasterbrewery.co.uk/ gave me one as a trial and refused to take any money for the first sack.

I made sure that I paid him for both when I recently got my second sack though.

He says that a sack of malt costs just over a tenner.

He put it through the books presumably - out of interest, did he charge you VAT on it? - I was charged VAT on mine but someone on here pointed out that it should be exempt being a foodstuff :?

I though business could clam back vat, as the endpoint user you end you paying it.

That sounds a bit perculiar.

Hi All
I was told by both of my hop and grain suppliers there is no VAT on hops or grain as they are classed of food stuff.
