While I'm at it, I noticed you mentioned melting your sample jar. Aside from melting your sample jar, never put your hydrometer in hot wort, it will instantly mess up the calibration and be useless from that point on.
Cool samples in a glass first, it's a good habit to get into for testing in general as many measurements will be thrown off at high temperature (e.g. pH) and test equipment will not last very long (e.g. pH probes)

Yeah my plan was to get a sample and then cool it in the fridge before using my hydrometer. I've heard they're very delicate.Jocky wrote:While I'm at it, I noticed you mentioned melting your sample jar. This time of year it is quicker to dunk the sample jar in a bucket of cold water, waiting for fridge air temperature to make the change from near boiling to 20c takes a long time and warms up the contents of the fridge to boot.somethingspecial wrote:Yeah my plan was to get a sample and then cool it in the fridge before using my hydrometer. Re: Getting started with my first recipe... *Bottling Done!*
Just got done tasting my first brew after a week conditioning at room temperature and it was amazing to think that it was beer that I made!
It had some fizz which I was pleasantly surprised with, although it didn't last very long. The bubbles were visible but only slightly discernible on the tongue.
It was reasonably clear and got about 2mm of head on pouring, though again that didn't hang around.
It was a little bitter and quite hoppy with slight fruity notes and it tasted quite 'strong'. Probably wouldn't want to see off more than two or three in a row.
All in all very pleased after only a week of conditioning! Have put a second bottle in the fridge to condition for a week and will leave the rest at room temp.
Can't wait to see how the taste changes over time!
