I've started a new thread for the next Brewalong
here.
Could we put all further discussion in there please?

Just had another read through this and realised that there hasn't been a "brewalong" in 2017, unless I somehow missed it.
My 2016 Summer Quaffer was a complete disaster beerwise (bloody awful in fact), but I enjoyed having a go.
Any plans this year, a "winter warmer" perhaps (possibly a bit late)?

At the moment I'm not able to organise anything, but that doesn't stop someone else from doing it....

Hmm, worth a thought.
What do you reckon then Tourer? Up for it? I guess we'd have to start a new thread.
Not sure I have the experience to suggest a recipe but maybe one of the more experienced members could?
What about style? I'm thinking it might too late for a winter warmer? Those stronger ales might need longer to mature than the three months up 'til Christmas that we have (assuming it's brewed early September). Any thoughts?

A winter warmer sounds good. There are lots of dark beers around 5% that could be winter-warmers. I brewed Graham Wheeler's Festival Mild and although mine was only 4.8%, it's a cracking pint. Never brewed it but something along the lines of Theakston's Old Peculiar would also be a good candidate. I guess any beer with a good bit of crystal, chocolate and black malt would work well and dare I say it, sugar.
Cheers

This seems to be stirring up a little interest!
So, Fuggled Mind, you reckon a new thread and try to kick it off?
(I don't see any difficulty with sugar, having read a little history and old recipes, there was no shame in using it in the good old days).

Sorry it's a bit late, yep definitely up for it but mine would be bit late as i'm away on sunday for a month back on 10th oct. We/I would need a lot of help from experienced brewers for a well balanced recipe (if used not to much chocolate malt for me though).
