First AG - Seconday or not

Post by macleanb » Fri Feb 29, 2008 9:04 am

Hi

My first AG "Epping Forest Dark" from the "Goldings Brewery" (I actually live on a hill called Goldings Hill!) is coming up to 6 days fermentation OG 1051 SG now 1013/1014 (Windsor yeast).

I am going to bottle it. What I am wondering is wether I should rack to a secondary for a period, or just go straight for the bottles.

Your opinions would be most welcome.

cheers & ttfn benm

I tend to go on clarity. If it's pretty clear bottle from primary but, I must admit, I like to transfer to secondary when I'm bottling so I don't end up with half an inch of sediment in the bottles. I can cope but guests don't seem to understand, so the clearer the better.

I would normally transfer to secondary for a week or so for a bit of extra maturation and clearing (and partly because my secondary accommodates the bottling stick) then prime with half teaspoon of glucose per bottle.

Hello I tend to go for Daabs 10 days to reduce the sediment then transfer to my beer sphere for minimum of 3 weeks for an og similer to what you started with longer in the barrel for higher gravity ales. I dont use finnings or priming sugars when bottling and find after about 6 to 8 weeks in the bottle the beer is cleared and nicely carbonated.

I would recomend useing safale us 05 yeast as this sticks really well to the bottom of the bottle have not got round to trying the windsor yeast yet.
Did yer like that?

I do the DaaB method. 10 days in FV then bottle straight from it. 8)
