perle malt haze?

Post by ColinKeb » Mon Jun 30, 2008 6:12 pm

has anyone had problems with perle malt and haze? Im aware you need to use a decoction mash with perle but i just lobbed it in with some marris otter and mashed it normaly. the resulting beer is very hazy almost cloudy despite finings and being left for some time to settle. :?

actually i think it might be infected, it doesnt taste off or smell off it just doesnt seem right to me. maybe a teensy bit ropey not really sure, its very frothy , in fact it comes out as 100% froth then settles down. bugger!

My first brew with Perle is a bit hazy. Same handling as with the MO and GP. I've got 10kg more to test with.

I had a sack of perle by accident and only noticed when chucking the empty sack in the shed. Didn't notice any difference. Perle has been used for years by brewers, MO is a more reliable barley crop-wise and malting -wise I think. Some tastings suggest MO is nicer for English beers.

Ive sussed it now, I added some oak chips and these have caused the hazyness and slightly odd flavour. due to its strength I left it for ages to mature and the oak has gone past the nice hint stage to the "log in my pint" stage. Its not very nice, i dont think i'll be playing with oak for a while

Don't you mean 'Pearl'? Perle is a type of hop. Got two sacks of Pearl malt - I'll post with the results of the clarity handicap stakes.

No, I don't think there will be a problem. Pearl is fine, used by a bunch of very learned homebrewers to good effect.
