Hi guys, I'm ready to produce my second AG brew but am totally clueless on what hops to use. I had intended making a Summer Lightening clone but couldn't get the required hops to do it. I basically like any beer that is similar'ish to that, fairly pale in colour and up around the 4.5% - 5% mark.
I want to make a 23L batch and after my visit to Barley Bottom earlier this evening I have to hand :-
25Kg M.O.
1Kg Torrified Wheat
50Gms Amarillo Gold (8.5%)
160Gms Progress (6%)
100Gms Aurora (5.8%)
100Gms Boadicea (7.6%)
100Gms Bobeck (3%)
100Gms Brewers Gold (4.6%)
100Gms Pioneer (9.3%)
I'm figuring 5Kg M.O., no problem there, it's what hops to use and at what times. I fancy trying out the Boadicea and wondered if this sounds feasible over a 60min boil?
60Gm at boil
25Gm at 20 mins left
15Gm at 1 min to flame out
Should I cut down on the quantities? Should I mix with other hops? I'm totally clueless as to what hops impart what flavours so I'm at a loss. The Boadicea is supposedly a direct replacement for Challenger but this is another hop I have not tried.
Stuck for recipe idea
I dare say, thats a pretty scary avatar, reminds me of my cousin, If thats your real picture I apologise!Gurgeh wrote:I find that Boadicea doesn't make for a brilliant single hop beer, but is superb for bittering.
I would recommend getting your IBU sorted with the boadicea, using progress and bobek at 15 mins (not 20) and then some more bobek after flameout (at 70C)
that would be very very nice.
Hi Parva......At flame out (heat off) let temp in boiler drop to 70c then add the last lot of hops.....I may be wrong but i think the idea is that you lose less aroma at this lower temp.Parva wrote:Cheers Gurgeh, I'll do that. :) When you say 'after flame-out' I presume you mean I chuck it in as the temp drops with the IC in or do you mean chuck it in the FV?
