Old Speckled Hen

For 23 ltrs

In the mash tun

In the boiler
540g invert cane sugar
65g challenger hops (full boil)

Well done - bet you'll love it...

Are you sure you got the target volume? Just thinking maybe you lost more to evaporation than you intended. You could top it up with water if you want to lower the OG.
If you did get 90% efficiency.... wow..... That's better than most breweries AFAIK...

I have to say i was a bit surprised myself. Maybe i got the hydrometer reading wrong! I'm checking the fumentation today so fingers crossed.
Maybe one of you more experienced brewers can calculate the expected efficiency based on the ingredients i used and my OG :)
Next one is going to be a little less strong. Cut down on the malt and aim for about 1045.

What sort of temperature did you take the reading at?

I worked it out, and got better than 90% efficiency.

What did you do differently in the mash and sparge?

Took the last reading just before i pitched the yeast @ 24 degC.
Mashed at 67 degC for 2 hours (not intentional but got a long phone call just as i was about to start preparing the sparge water). Sparged @ 75degC, took about 30 minutes 5lt/10minutes. Checked SG of last running and was still around 1015 so i put another 1 lt through. Boiled for 90 mins which left about 22.5lts in boiler.

Just to let you interested parties know, primary fermentation was complete in 6 days. Checked final gravity at 1018. Keged beer and will now try and leave for 4 weeks. Did have a sneak taste and it was fantastic. Hope all my AG’s go this well !! One thing I did try was to use bottled water in the mash, maybe this helped.

Ok, Ok FT. But it's v.hard to keep your hands off a good brew :!:

Now about to order some additional ingredients to make next AG. I'm going for a best Bitter with an og around 1045.
