AG #5 tomorrow

Post by youreds91 » Sat Sep 27, 2008 5:14 pm

My AG attempts have gone pretty well so far, my first one - London Pride is now being supped, very good it is too.

I'm evaluating Beersmith & knocked this up with the ingredients I have:

Amount Item Type % or IBU
3.80 kg Pale Malt, Maris Otter (3.0 SRM) Grain 81.72 %
0.55 kg Caramel/Crystal Malt -120L (120.0 SRM) Grain 11.83 %
0.30 kg Wheat, Torrified (1.7 SRM) Grain 6.45 %
60.00 gm Fuggles [4.40 %] (90 min) Hops 32.9 IBU
25.00 gm Challenger [7.10 %] (60 min) Hops 20.7 IBU
10.00 gm Goldings, East Kent [4.60 %] (0 min) (Aroma Hop-Steep) Hops

Est Original Gravity: 1.052 SG
Est Final Gravity: 1.013 SG
Estimated Alcohol by Vol: 4.98 %
Bitterness: 53.7 IBU
Est Color: 15.7 SRM

I was just messing around, with half an eye on other recipes on here. What do you reckon gents?

CD
Am just doing the same
Have messed with grain but used some LM as well
My next brew will be AG i believe 5kg total is required for a reasonable beer
4kg of Morris Otter/Pearl/Larger - not sure yet - think i will toss a coin on the day
500g Crystal - 1 bag
500g Malted Wheat - 1 bag - for the head
I will then see how that works
Am minded now to just produce a quaffable beer to enjoy
Rather than to try & copy some one elses brew
To me its a self sufficiency thing, cost saving yes
But its a life style thing
The key thing is to enjoy

whats the brew length on that?

If it is 23l then you are expecting an efficency of near 90%. If that was my kit I would get 1044 og from your reciepe. then the hops would be far too high, only want 0.7 or 0.8 of the og as ibu (about 30 ibu's).

alternately whack another kilo of grain in to up it to 1052 at 75% efficency and jobs a good un

I dropped it to 21l in Beersmith, my Thorn Electrim boiler ain't that big. Changing it to 23l gives an OG estimate of 1047.

I've not even started to look at efficiency yet, I'm just brewing & supping & all is good so far :=P

The best thing about this AG lark is that I haven't bought any beer from a shop since I started.

Great pic! I remember watching him the season after that pen. after Italia 90 and thinking "we're watching a world class player here. Who knows how long it will last!" :-({|=

Nearly 12% crystal? Personally I'd drop that a bit and the hops, but that's just me tho'

I was a season ticket holder then (& a couple of seasons before). My best memory of that season was when we went to Old Trafford for the league game, Forest free kick at the old Stretford end, full of Man U. fans jeering him, what happens next.....? clicky

Anyway back to beer talk

That is a lot of Crystal, I've dropped it back to 300g, upped the MO to 4kg, also dropped the Fuggles a bit, I use Dave Line's book for reference & after reading on here the consensus is to drop the hops a bit.

I shall now venture into the garage to do this concoction, look for some brew porn in the brewdays thread later on...
