Confused on Efficiency for Recipie Formulation
Confused on Efficiency for Recipie Formulation
Ive been trying to calculate my efficiency, as I am designing my first grain bill & beer using Designing Great Beers by Ray Daniels.
Using Rays method I found I had 62% efficiency. Using the calculations on this site I found I had 75%.........
The figures I have are : 5kg Maris Otter
300g Crystal
Came out at 1052 for 5 gals (after boil).
Any help appreciated.
Here is my provisional grain bill for my 'Busty' Robust Porter:
Pale 3411g
Crystal 372g
Black 281g
Choc 281g
Munich 168g
For 5 gal
Target 1052 OG
Assume 75% eff.
Help. Any suggestions appriecated.

If I'm working this out right, if you get 75% out of that grain bill, you should end up with a wort OG, after boil, of 1043.5 at 23L. [which incidentally is about what i got from a similar volume grain bill for my last effort] But I haven't factored in the different malts, and my maths head is in the bucket at the moment, sterilizing.

Mmmmmm, Russian Imperial Stout. Give it a good year before you try it if you can, well worth it.Flaming Barrel wrote:Yeh just found it a while ago, also confirmed 75% so i should be happy, but i need to be sure so i can formulate my grain bills properly.
Can't drink today, off work sick, kidneys hurt....payback for 20 years abuse!
Gonna try & design my russian imperial stout next.

Ray Daniels uses US gallons as opposed to UK gallons. I made this mistake a while back and found that when I used the correct conversion figures the numbers worked out much better. Just a suggestion........
