when to add sugar

Post by the red devil » Mon Oct 20, 2008 6:30 pm

Will be attempting an Old P clone tomorrow (my 3rd AG). Forget where i got the recipe but can't seem to find when you shold add the sugar's. If you treat them as an extract do you add then at the last 15 mins of the boil (as you do when extract brewing) or do you add them at the start to enrich the flavour ?
The amounts are:-

150 gm Black Treacle.
300 gm Dark Brown Sugar.
300 gm Cane Sugar.

Would appreciate some advice

good question, i would normally chuck mine in towards the end as they don't really need boiling.

I agree with prolix. Adding them early might possibly effect your hop utilisation slightly, due to the "thicker" wort. Last 15 mins means its had time to sterilise from boiling.

Thanks guys. I'll take the advice and add at last 15 mins. Must remember to make notes
