bored of kits

Post by frany8472 » Sat Nov 01, 2008 3:58 pm

ive been doing kits for over a year now. had some goods ones and some bad ones. im looking for somthing else todo. ive looked at extract and that looks ok im also looking at mini mash. are there any other ideas out there? i dont have enough capital to launch into AG. but maybe in a year or to. ive read the instructions on this site on others regarding extract and mini mash. is there anybody out there that would show me what to do as it still seems really complicated. and what would really interest me is someone showing how a AG works from start to finish. if there is anyone out there that can help. i live in rugby in the west midlands

I was in pretty much the same position as you. I couldn't afford to buy the lot at once so first of all I bought a boiler and did an extract brew. Next came the bits and pieces to make an immersion chiller and did another extract. A few months later came the mash tun and my first all grain recipe.
It took awhile to get the gear together but in the meantime I read loads which was a bit of a mistake as it had the effect of baffling me with all kinds of stuff.
Follow the instructions here;

and here;

Ignore the science stuff for now, any queries post on the forum.
Hope this helps.

Go all grain and don't look back. There are many people on the 'kit' that can help you.

You obviously have a fermenter and a means of dispensing your beers. So, if you can beg/steal/borrow some stock pots and a 25-30 litre coolbox there is no reason why you cannot have a go at all grain. Get about 12 litres of water up to 74C and bung it into the pre-heated coolbox. Chuck in 4 1/2 kilos of grain, quickly stir to make a porridge, bang on the lid and wait 90 minutes. Once time is up, brim the coolbox with 80C water, stir, then invent some way of separating the liquid from the solids. Boil the liquor in the various pans for 90 mins with 90g Goldings in a muslin bag (dishcloth), adding a further 20g (similarly bagged) after 75 minutes. Once the 90 minutes are up remove the hop bags and put the lids on the pans. Go to bed. Wake up and empty the pans into your fermenter and chuck in a packet of S04. Wait 10 days then do whatever you do with your kit beers. Go and do something else for a couple of weeks. Taste. Welcome to the dark side. The small matter of affordability will no longer be an issue :lol:
