Is it too late to dilute?

Post by Kristoff » Tue Nov 04, 2008 10:19 am

Hi all, did my first AG on Saturday, came up a bit short at 18 litres and a bit stronger than expected at 1048 (wanted 1040), i've just realised I could of diluted and have used Andy's dilution calculator, which tells me I need to add 3.76 litres, but having pitched my yeast on Sunday, will it be too late to dilute now?

I've never done it, but I can't see the problem as long as you make sure the water is sterile and chlorine-free before you add it.

Thanks Jim, would quarter of a campden tablet do the trick in 3.7 litres and would it be ok with the yeast, it wouldn't kill it off?

Well, the usual rate is 1/2 a tablet in 23 litres, so that's a bit much. If you could quarter the tablet (tricky, I know) that would be nearer the mark.

At that concentration it shouldn't affect the yeast.

if splitting the tablet proves to be a headache you could always crush a whole one into a litre of water and then pour a percentage of the litre into your main batch of water eg, 250 ml would equal a quarter of a campdon tablet
