Had never heard of this until I read John Palmers book. Does anyone do this and noticed a difference to just adding it straight to the boil?
Thanks, Gaz.
Rehydrating Irish Moss
Re: Rehydrating Irish Moss
Seconded.
However have not used Whirlfloc, but Protofloc in tablet form. I used Irish Moss for 300 brews, but would not revert back to using it.
Chucking in a Protofloc tablet is easy, with no need to weigh out or hydrate as with Irish Moss.

Re: Rehydrating Irish Moss
I found rehydrating it in cold water made a big difference, but rehydrating in hot water didn't.
Re: Rehydrating Irish Moss
Thanks guys. What's the difference between Protofloc and Whirlfloc then?
Re: Rehydrating Irish Moss
A very good question. It's come up several times before and as far as I can remember no one supplied the answer.
Re: Rehydrating Irish Moss
Found this comment on another website, re Whirlfloc:
" blend of Irish Moss and purified Kappa carrageenan that encourages the precipitation of haze causing materials such as proteins and Beta glucans. Prepared in a quick dissolving, highly soluble tablet form. Add 1 tablet per 5 gallons with 5-10 minutes left in boil. Everyone who has tried them won't go back to irish moss."
Here's another detailed link on Whirlfloc too.
