Susan hops

Post by jubby » Thu Nov 20, 2008 2:38 pm

I have some of these from Barley bottom. Anybody used them? Bittering, aroma or dual purpose?

I want to make my own recipe using these hops which is my 'planned brew' named after my wife (Susan) Isn't that sweet

I may use these soon. Planning to use any old hops for my alpha and then stir a heap of these in late on. I'm very tempted by the description and think that they'd really suit a hoppy pale. Looking forward to hearing what folks think about them...

Yes.

Me too

In all fairness though, I did ask my wife and daughter to come up with a suitable name, but they dithered about for too long so I named it myself. It's no reflection on my wife of course, it's just that lots of the good ales have 'old' or 'bishop' in the name. Needless to say i couldn't come up with a name that included bishop!

Gurgeh, that is exactly my plan and my reason for wanting to use them. I am not sure weather to go for a light summer type ale with challenger for bittering and loads of Susan aroma,(like Bishop's farewell) or a copper coloure'd ale along the lines of London Pride substituting the Golding late and dry hop for Susan.

Any ideas from you more experienced brewers?

Top tip: brew the beer first, then only name it after your better half if the beer is good....

Yeah I saw the post. I'm just north of Peterborough so it's not ultra-close but would still be do-able except we are away this weekend. Maybe next time.

I think both those plans are cracking. do both.

I'd be tempted to go nuts on the pale - 5 gallons 30IBU from challenger (boudicca in my case) and then 60g at 15 minutes 40g in steep. like it hoppy.

similar regime in the london pride style beer. maybe leave out the steep though.

For my beers i name them on a pirate/nautical theme (long story) so i have ones that include

Hornswaggle Ale (pirate phrase for out doing somebody)
Captains Leg Bitter (From a song by Dropkick Murphys - Shipping upto Boston)
Golden Hind Ale (Obvious really)
Scurvy Dog TC
Skull Duggery TC (Should be renamed Skull Buggery :D )
Ann Bonnie Bitter (Lady Pirate from Ireland)
Master Mates TC (Character from Capain Pugwash)

Maybe it might give you some ideas for naming your own.

Only just noticed the Bishop bit, something along the lines of Durham Bishop or Prince Bishop or The Bishop`s B(hop) Bishop n Bard, Bashin` Bishop #-o

Thanks Gurgeh, those are pretty much what I had in mind, but with dry hop in the LP. You are right of course, I am going to have to brew them both now.

An old sea dog perhaps??

Themed names. Never thought of that, it's worth considering.
