Grain mills, anyone recommend one?

Post by ChrisG » Sat Nov 22, 2008 5:48 pm

In the market for a grain mill and wondered if anyone had knowledge of these.

The one my HBS said he could get me was £239! way to expensive for my budget....take off £100. ;)

So I did see this from Hop & Grape.....http://www.hopandgrape.co.uk/catalog/de ... =GRA373119

Looks pretty good....what do you think.

Any comments, thoughts????

I have just got a crankandstein 2d off ebay, brewed twice and think its fabby. Has nine preset adjustments so no problem making sure both sides are even. I bought the "barebones" and made my own hopper. Mill cost around £80 inc postage from the states. 5kg in under a minute.

Hi Tony,
May I ask how much it cost? Did you have to pay import taxes and VAT, also the exchange rate is poor at the moment.

I'd be interested too what the tax on something like this would cost?

If it comes from the states into Heathrow, in my experience, you will pay VAT and then the VAT mans collector - Parcel Force will charge an additional £8 before it will be delivered. This is presumably a VAT collection fee as they have already been paid for delivering it.

Items I have received from the far east seem to be exempt.

Fortunately you are nowhere near Heathrow

I have a Crankandstein 3D, works fine.

In my experience it's totally random as to what get's stopped and taxed and what doesn't. I've had big expensive orders from the US go through OK and small ones stopped and taxed. If it's sent by courier you will pretty much have to pay tax. If sent by USPS then it's the luck the draw.

The amount of tax is 17.% (currently) on the whole amount for the package INCLUDING SHIPPING.

Firstly you will have to pay import duty.

Secondly you will have to pay VAT. Bear in mind this will be based not just on the grain mill's cost, but also the carriage fee.

Thirdly you will have to pay £13.50 to Parcelforce for their "Clearance fee".

You can avoid the above legalised theft if you buy within the EU zone.

I have never paid import duty, and the VAT was based on their ability to read to the declared value of the goods (crap writing by the supplier is not good news in all cases).

What is more worrying is the huge increase in the Parcel Force charge, or perhaps people in Suffolk have to pay more under some new government guidelines.

So it is a complete lottery.

Well it was $138 for the mill and $60 (IIRC) for shipping but I was lucky enough to buy it last year and got $2 to the £1 so just over the £100 . . . . I was also lucky enough that it didn't get stopped at customs, and Parcel Farce didn't take their pound of flesh . . . but I had already allowed for 5% duty and the 17.5% VAT as I fully expected to pay it it still made it a good deal and better (just about) than Beertech . . .who didn't have any in stock

Not strictly true, as even if it is a gift the purchaser still has to pay duty
