Barley Syrup alternative

Post by boingy » Tue Nov 25, 2008 6:54 pm

Is there a suitable alternative to the 0.5 kg of barley syrup that my recipe demands. The syrup is still available but it is becoming more rare and my LHBS no longer stocks it.

Is it an all grain recipe? If so, replace it with pale malt.

I'd like to see it become so rare, it disappeared for good.

It is raw barley that has been chemical altered with enzymes and is probably why a lot of kits in the early days tasted shite, and homebrewing got a bad name for itself and lost it's appeal.

Yeah. It's a Dave Line recipe from yonks ago. 3kg pale plus 0.5 kg of Barley Syrup and 0.5 kg invert sugar for a 5 gallon batch. Regardless of how un-PC the syrup is the recipe was one of my favourites in my early AG days (about 20 years ago).

So how much pale malt do I add to compensate for a missing 0.5 kg of syrup, assuming average extract rates? Do I need any other grains to balance the flavour?

Hop and Grape stock Barley Syrup, I've seen it on their shelves in the shop

if you are replacing with pale malt I would just add another 500g plus your 500g of Golden Syrup
