Christmas Brew

Post by vaudy » Thu Oct 26, 2006 4:45 pm

Just fired up the boiler, about to brew a Timothy Taylor Landlord, not brewed for ages - impressed with the new site.
Hope to improve my extract percentage - going to lengthen the mash to 2 hours.
Will let you know how I go on later tonight.

see ya later

Do you batch sparge or fly sparge?
Could your efficiency problems be with sparge rather than mash??

Good luck :D

Not accounting for deadspace in the boiler/hop absorption is partially responsible for my low efficiency (65%). I get the same efficiency each and every time though so I don't worry about it. Good luck with the brew!

The brew went well, the mash efficiency was 72%, which I am pleased with.
I agree with mysterio, that the efficiency is probably down due to the amount of extract left in the spent hops after running off, I have considered rinsing the hops but don't want to end up with filtered out nasties ending up in the finished wort.
I always brew ten gallons which means that the lost extract is probably greater than if I had brewed 5 gallons.

I don't think the extra 30 minutes mash time resulted in any great improvement with regard to the extract, I am going to revert back to mashing for 90 minutes.

Going to check the gravity and decide if to barrel tonight or tomorrow.

Cheers

Just seen the various recipes for this beer in the recpie section.

The version that I have brewed is taken from wheeler, this is my favorite home brew recipe, and I feel the results are near to the real thing.

Loss to Hops and Trub seems to be my biggest problem and something that I wanted to tackle head on.

I had never considered rinsing the hops before and didn't seem keen on doing so for the exact reasons you have stated. Anyway, DaaB mentioned adding water while the boiler is draining.

This will have the benefit of rinsing the hops without disturbing the trub
