strange clouds in my first ag brews

Post by Sam.k » Wed Dec 17, 2008 10:34 pm

righty lads I have been brewing kits for a while and have decided to go ag as I want to make my brews, well, mine.
I have bought, bodged and built a kit that I can mash, boil and brew about 2 gallons at a time, this is a temporary set up ad I will be buying a real kit in the new year.
I understand about break material, sediment ect but I have never seen full on whippy White clouds in my brew.
It smells really nice which is making me think that prehaps this is normal, I normally brew in plastic brew bins but the ag is in 1gallon glass dj's could my clouds just be a normal brewing sight that I have missed out on by using opaque bins?
Any help on this matter would be top as I would like my first proper brew to be a success

I have exactly the same set up as you.
I brew 2 gallons at a time and ferment in 2 glass demi johns.
I have also seen the fluffy cloud type matter inthe brews and I think it is something to do with the protein material and the yeast reacting.
When I rack off teh first demi, i get very little break material but when i rack off the second i get more as it is nearer the bottle of te FV.
The second demi will always produce more clouds than the first, and the racking proceedure is the only difference.
By the end of primary, it has all sunk so I dont think its anything to worry about.

Most likely just not seen it before through the plastic bucket material.

top notch cheers guys, I was a tad worried but as it seem quite normal it's got to be fine.
Buying a proper boiling bin in the new year. One with a filter of some kind :)
