Help - malt crushing solution sought

Post by BritishBelgianTwst » Mon Dec 22, 2008 2:41 pm

My grain mill hasn't arrived from the US yet and I'm on holiday next week and was planning a brew.
Has anyone got an easy solution to crush 5 kg of malt which doesn't involve going out and buying ready-crushed malt?
Cheers,
Paul

Thanks for the suggestion Parva but I reckon that a bin bag would split.

I've just seen a post on another forum from a fella that uses his food processor..... it may be worth a try!

It's a fine line between not crushing evenly or enough and getting rubbish efficiency or overdoing it and ending up with a stuck mash. Personally I'd either wait until the mill arrives or buy some precrushed malt to tide you over.

Cheers Steve, unfortunately there are no HBS that sell precrushed malt in Belgium, in fact I only know of two places that I can actually buy malt here and one of them has a minimum order of 150kg!
Beer is too cheap here, it isn't good for the promotion of all grain home brewing!

I'd say that you could go down to a LHBS and ask them nicely to crush it if they have a mill, but you've said that you don't have one close. I've heard people do it in coffee grinders, but they grind it too finely and you'll likely end up with a stuck mash. It's not easy, but I'd say skip this brew and wait til you get the mill. Otherwise you'll probably end up disappointed at the first brew due to weak efficiency/extraction from a poor crush. Wait til you get the mill then do it well.
