Ok to freeze my Hops?

Post by GBH » Sat Dec 27, 2008 2:22 pm

Hi,

Was wondering if freezing my hops may have been a factor in the Beer tasting well...tasteless until I dry hopped it

Should it be ok to use these straight from Freezer?

Obviously fresh hops are best but freezing hops is the best way to keep 'em for more than a short time.
Try to exclude as much air from the bag as you can and seal 'em up tight.

I vacuum pack mine then into the freezer. Hops can last a long time frozen, but the AA% does drop some as they age.
I'm just here for the beer.

It's ok to use hops straight from the freezer, but if you want to use them for dry hopping, it's best remove them from cold storage about 24 hours before you need them. This is something I have recently learned from Benj at the Boathouse Brewery. Apparently, if you don't do this it can cause grassy flavours. Not sure if it works, but i do it anyway just in case.
