Yup, just a load of trub/break material brough to the surface. Make sure it's left behind in the fermenter when you transfer

I skim this off too...never used to bother until I tasted a tiny bit (after reading about it causing off flavors if allowed to sink back into the beer) and it was grim...really bitter, so I could quite believe the effect it would have on producing off flavours!
Since then, I always skim to get rid of it!

When I pitched the yeast (liquid split as per jims way)I noticed I had a layer of brown stuff laying on top of the white stuff,I mentioned it on another thread a couple of days ago,and DAAB mentioned it could be trub,if it was do you think that this is where this lot came from.Spoon being cleand ready for skimming,do I just scrape the brown off and leave the paler stuff.

I don't tend to skim these days, I wait untill it begins to drop back, I then rack the beer to an airlocked secondary leaving the trub behind.

This is the main reason I use a 2ndary fermentor - let it get most of the fermenting out of the way in ~ 3 days and then rack from the gunk into the 2ndary. I left some break in my first AG brew and it turned out rank -> down the sink it went
sorry kev - just noticed u already said this

I only skim if the yeast head is about to exit the top of the fermenter bin. Best to leave it alone unless absolutely necessary. As I don't harvest from the yeast slurry then I'm not worried about what gets left behind after racking.
