Fullers London Pride AG clone
Re: Fullers London Pride AG clone
The cask is 4.1, bottled 4.7
Re: Fullers London Pride AG clone
As above. the cask LP is 4.1% ABV while the bottles are 4.7%. Getting 1035 OG may well give you something similar to Chiswick @ 3.5%.

You may be spot on Wulf; I just checked the mini keg carry out of London Pride and it is 4.1%: http://store.fullers.co.uk/Store/Product/BOLPMC.aspx

Re: Fullers London Pride AG clone
I have been trying to mail down a London Pride clone for a couple of years now and think I have finally nailed. Tasted my latest batch, brewed three weeks ago, alongside a real Pride and it is very close. I doubt I could tell the difference in a blind tasting. If there is any difference at all, mine is maybe a touch darker in colour and a touch maltier, so I may just back off a fraction on the crystal malt next time.
For me, the single most important thing is yeast selection. I brewed several versions of this recipe using White Labs WLP002 but it just lacked the complexity of the real Pride. Switching to WYeast 1968 made all the difference. I know that a lot of people say they are essentially the same yeast but my perception, with this particular beer, is that they are not.
Ingredients:
4.20 kg Pale Malt, Maris Otter (5.9 EBC)
0.15 kg Caramel/Crystal Malt - 30L (59.1 EBC)

15.00 g Northdown [8.00 %] - Steep/Whirlpool 30.0 min

A fine beer may be judged with only one sip, but it's better to be thoroughly sure.
Re: Fullers London Pride AG clone
Thanks for the update! Done this beer (well the GW recipe) a few times myself & find your yeast research is interesting.
Personally, I would find making comparisons with the original quite difficult where I live as the beer does vary a lot pub to pub/ cask to cask. I also wonder whether they've tweaked their recipe themselves over the years? (Suspect so). Certainly my versions have tasted 'how I remember it' but I didn't do direct comparison side by side. Did you compare next to the original & did you use bottle or a pub sample? (My tastes pick up a slight peppery taste that I don't detect in the cask versions).
Yeast wise - I have used S04, Muntons and Hogs Back Brewery yeast for this beer in the past. I used to love the Hogs Back yeast (which IIRC they get from Hook Norton) but I fell out of love with the yeast finding the result to be a more flocculant fermentation and a more-buttery taste as a result. If I do this recipe again I might use 1968.

Re: Fullers London Pride AG clone
Like you, I find that Pride varies a lot from pub to pub. So I don't do my comparisons against the cask version, even though this is a clone of the cask Pride. I compare against the bottled version and trust that fullers have put a lot of money and effort into ensuring that their bottled version tastes as close to the cask version as possible
