Brewday 19/2/07 - Another TTL

Post by mysterio » Thu Jan 18, 2007 11:00 pm

Doing a batch of a TTL-style bitter tommorow. I'm not used to hopping a 10 gallon batch, do you just double what you'd normally use in a 5 gallon batch? I think my hop strainer is going to conk out with all these hops :? , that is if my mash tun will hold all that grain... it's going to be a close one

Like the man said..double the hops. No problems should be encountered. How big is your mash tun? That grain bill should fit fine in a 25L fermenting bucket mash tun or a standard size coolbox mashtun.

Re Landlord....when was the 'legendary' Allan Hey era that gets talked about?

Rooster Brewery quote: "The Timothy Taylor's Landlord of my youth was one of the most exiting taste experiences I have ever had. Citrusy grapefruit overlaying bitterness with a tangerine aromatic on top. Allan Hey's Landlord was Leonardo stuff."

I remember drinking Landlord in the John Bull, Layerthorpe, York, in the early 80's. It was pretty bloody good, but then so was Malton Double Chance, in the same pub.

The John Bull was the best pub in York, in my opinion. It had an original 30's interior (they never bothered to redecorate or renovate - ie ruin) Whereas a lot of Olde-Style pubs have nicotine coloured walls, in the John Bull - it was real nicotine.

In spite of strong local campaigning, and apparently not much help from Camra, it was pulled down to increase the size of the ajacent Mazda dealerships's car park around about 1987. Sad loss. Money talks.

Nice bit of history SteveD!

Yeah BD its the 10 gallon boilers that H&G sell with two elements. Even so, I'll tend to do a slightly lower boiler volume and top up with water at the end.

Only just woke up five minutes ago  so looks like I won't be finishing before dinner time.

I was at uni in York in the mid-late 80's - shame I wasn't a real ale drinker then!

Good article!

I forgot to mention i'm using Golden Promise and about a teaspoon of Gypsum to emphasise the hop bitterness a little. I might see if i've got some leftover Styrians in the freezer to throw in at the end.

My hydrometer is smashed :x so there's going to be a bit of guesswork. Might have to get one of those refractometers from Hong Kong.

The 9 kilos of grain really tested my mash tun to the limits

9.1kg grain... good to know mysterio, I've adjusted that ESB recipe I was worried about down to something like 9.3kg @ 75% efficiency (which I'll be lucky to get.)
Recipe says only 65%, what actual efficiency do you get mysterio?

I think you'll manage 9.3kg - theres about an inch of space at the top of my tun.

I made up the recipe based on my own efficiency, which is only 65% unfortunately. Pretty low, but it doesn't bother me because it always comes out the same. It could be because of deadspace in the boiler/hop absorption.

Surprisingly hassle free brew-day. I'm pretty comfortable with 10 gallon brewing now. 180 grams of hops looks like an enormous amount when they're hydrated, they must have absorbed a good half gallon of wort

mysterio, I have never thought of doing that with the hops, but it sounds great, do you just run a bit of sparged wort off to fluff the hops up before they go in to the boil? What benefits do you notice?

I meant at the end of the boil when they're all left over, they're rehydrated with wort and take up much more volume than when they're dry.

yeah my efficiency has been more like the 60's recently
