brew day 4/2/07 2nd brew

Post by prolix » Mon Feb 05, 2007 12:25 am

Just brewed a wherry clone using crow_flies recipe

3.8kg pale malt
0.4kg crystal
45g fuggles 90 min
30g goldings
30g stryian both 30 min

90 @ 68 mash

safale 04 pitched dry

23l @1044 og

Had a great day compared to last time everything went to plan, false bottom was great, hop strainer excellent twin elements made boiling and heating faster.

Even tried some water treatment using the brupac stuff. The wort tasted nice at the end too.

Still managed to leave some taps open though  but hey too prefect a day would have been scary.

Thought I'd taste my pale ale from first brew and it is delicious still a bit hoppy but only been in barrel 2 weeks. I can not believe how nice it is.

Nice one, looks like we have a new ag fan, I am pleased that you like the taste of your 1st brew, it's a great feeling to enjoy a good quality beer knowing that it is all your own work. :D

Has anybody started AG brewing and thought "I don't like this I think I'll do extract brewing instead"?

Or asking yourself 50p a pint is good... 15p a pint is better

Hey hope it turns out as well as the ones I have conditioning!! sounds like its off to a good start. My favourite so far is the one I dry hopped with Chinook, that isnt quite ready yet, but the sneeks I've tasted so far are very promising....and just to whet your appetite here is one I made earlier......

sorry about the frosting, but my shed is lager cold at the moment!!

Thanks Daab, now if i could just crack the taste.....

actually its not far out. When I get the chance I will have a go with the ingredients that 'Wherry' Ray divulged. Reckon in 5 or 10 brews I'll have it half cracked.

It will be interesting to hear how your's turns out, I imagine it will be slightly more bitter as you are boiling longer than I did and i steeped the last 30g, rather than boiled for the last 30. However, the high mash temp leaves a fair amount of residual sweetness, so I think that wont be a problem.

My next version will be: -

Grainbill
3.80 kg Pale Malt, Maris Otter (5.9 EBC) Grain 90.5 %
0.20 kg CaraMalt - 40L (78.8 EBC) Grain 4.8 %
0.20 kg Crystal Malt - 60L (120.0 EBC) Grain 4.8 %
35.00 gm Goldings, East Kent [5.00%] (60 min) Hops 16.6 IBU
30.00 gm Progress [6.30%] (30 min) Hops 13.8 IBU
35.00 gm Styrian Goldings [5.40%] (Aroma Hop-Steep)
20.00 gm Styrian goldings [5.40%] (Dry Hop in Barrel)

Beer Profile
Est Original Gravity: 1.040 SG
Estimated Alcohol by Vol: 3.8 %
Bitterness: 30.5 IBU
Est Color: 14.8 EBC

Mash
90mins @ 67.8

Only problem is with the move to Norfolk in April, I really shouldnt be brewing any more barrels :( need to drink this lot first. On the good side, I'll have a Wherry ale house on my doorstep so taste matching will become a whole lot easier....
