B_D's Brewday 12_02_06

Finished another batch of al-key-hole 8) Followed Line's recipe for Harveys Sussex Best, although increased the pale malt and reduced the NB hops slightly.

4 kg Pale Malt
250 g Brown Sugar
259g Flaked Maize (finished pack)

60 gm Goldings (4.1 AAUs)
26 gm Northern Brewer (8 AAUS).
(both 90 mins)

S04, rehydrated for a change.
25 Litres at 1040; 73% efficiency.
About 37 IBUs according Jim's equation; 42 acording to promash  Real Harveys is 38 IBUS. Hmmm... taking a risk with the bitterness.
15 gms DLS and 25 ml CRS.

Alcohol consumed during/post brew:
1 x bottle of Fullers ESB;
1 x bottle of Cropton Yorkshire Moors
1 x pint of APA style homebrew
1 x pint of homebrew bitter.
Feeling a little boozed

73% very tidy
Sure a few IBU's isn't too noticeable, the calc's are just a good guideline. Love the Fullers ESB

Good on you BD. Thought better of the black malt or roast barley then :o . This really is a very nice drop but worringly drinkable ( see below)

My Corni , which I must admit I thought was half full of Harveys, spluttered its last of this great brew last night just between extra time and penalties. Not impressed  - not even going to think how few days it lasted ....

Better get another brew on at the weekend. Gales HSB favourite at moment.

Blimey, that was quick Bigster; glad you enjoyed it 8) Yep, I decided to leave it as it was for a change. I got close to adding late hops for steeping, but managed to stop myself.

I'm quite partial to a bit of HSB - perhaps you can take that to Derby now you've finished all your Haveys

Have got 6 bottles of Harveys left for Derby but the spare one I tried was no where near as nice as the corni - the dry hopping really worked a treat on this one. Think I will dry hop as a matter of course now I muslin bags and ping pong balls.
btw another corni turning up tomorrow as a very early birthday present- that will be 2 empty cornis in my garage. Surely a criminal offence

I've got 5 empty cornies!

Have a kit beer destined for one of 'em and will be brewing on Saturday to top up supplies. Need to brew the w/e afterwards also to keep the production flowing 8)

Well - it's a modified TTL recipe with challenger first wort hops, fuggles and lots of styrian goldings at power off. Grist is maris otter with a dash of crystal for a colour tweak. Hogs back yeast as usual.
