Double batch on Sunday

Post by BigEd » Tue Feb 13, 2007 5:16 am

Had a successful brew session yesterday with two US 10 gallon batches in the books. A friend lent aid as we did a batch each of my IPA and a new porter recipe. The fact that it was the first time in 10 days the temperature had been above freezing was greatly appreciated as my brewing is done in the back yard. Here is the porter recipe which shows promise based on tasting the wort.

Chocolate Rye Porter 38 Litres/10 US Gallons

6.35 Kg Munton's Pale malt (Pearl)
910g Weyermann Chocolate Rye malt
225g Weyermann CaraAroma 120L
225g Weyeramann Carafa II
450g Munton's Crystal 55L
450g Weyermann CaraFoam

57g Challenger for 60 minutes
29g Kent Goldings for 30 minutes
29g Kent Goldings for 10 minutes

Mash @ 67C for 60 minutes, mashout @ 76C for 5 minutes

OG 1.060, IBU ~39

Yeast-Wyeast 1028 London Ale

Damn it's nice to be on a homebrew site where somebody likes my hop choices. I don't bother posting recipes on the US sites anymore. :=P Indeed they are a great hop combination and one of my favorites. Rye has a very nice spicy/grainy/nutty character although it is difficult to actually describe it. The chocolate rye combines the usual bittersweet roasty flavors with a nice rye background. Cheers!

Now BigEd, you know that I appreciate your recipes when you post them!!
See, BigEd doesn't care for the "C" hops that many folks use here in the States, hence his statement, and why we both ended up on this HB site!!

Yes, Ted, you are in the select minority among the "C" hop drones of the American forums. :bonk

Bullion - Vile :D I made a brew to use up surplus Bullion and Northern Brewer. Boy, did I get the hopping wrong. It was nasty, and went straight down the sink. My note in the log : Horrible - Don't do it again.

Does Bullion still exist, haven't seen it mentioned for years, thought it was extinct as a variety.

I had a pint of W J King's seasonal/one-off(?) beer 'Bullion' a while ago, made only with those hops, and it was tasty

Edit - it's available again in March if you happen to see it:

Oh yeah Steve, I have come across some combos that I wasn't fond of, that's for sure! One hop I won't use again is a new American hop called Palisade, I just couldnt stand it! It basically ruined what was a very promising American Pale Ale, unfortunately I used those hops for dry hopping and it was just awful!!
I have never used Bullion, but have heard mixed reports on that hop. I was never fond of Brewers Gold, but then I made BigEd's take on an old IPA from Ballantine in the U.S. and it was wonderful, so I have changed my opinion of BG hops!!
