Brew Day 25/02/07

Post by Worzel » Sat Feb 24, 2007 10:30 pm

Just been sorting out what to make tomorrow,
decided on trying out one of the clones from the recipe section.
Innkeepers Special Reserve
Has anyone made this before, any tips?

Just been doing my maths

I'm going to use 7.5 gal water in the mash

maris otter 6075g
crystal 1162g

Boil 90min

fuggles 50g
goldings 50g

15 mins before end
fuggles 7g
goldings 7g

With the sparge water I usually end up with about 8-8.5g of wort.

I'm a bit worried about using so much crstal malt, I don't usually add so much. What do you think?

34 litres of mash liquor for 7.2kg of grist ?

That's a thin mash at 4.7L/kg

What about the crystal, does it seem too much?

I didn't add so much crstal in the end

6475g pale malt
800g crystal

mashed this with 7.5gal water for 90min

45g Fuggles 90min boil made up to 8.5gal after sparging
45g Goldings

8g Fuggles 15min from end
8g Goldings

Everything seemed to go ok
The final gravity was 1053, a bit higher than I thought it would be.

I did get to try out my new homemade filter see below, it worked well, I got a clear wort after mashing and boiling, something I've never managed.

Looks like all the joints are soldered or have you left some unsoldered for disassembly ?

All the joints are soldered, it was my first attempt at wielding a blow torch so some of the joints are better than others. I also got carried away and started to make a sculpture out of the bits left over.
Blow torchs, solder and the wife out shopping! :D

Looks like a good job! Most people don't bother fully soldering manifolds so they can be taken apart for cleaning but I'm sure you'll find a method...

I don't take mine apart as it's soldered solid. Never caused a problem here. :D

my hop strainer and boiler get a 'quick' rinse and a check that there aren't any blockages in the slots and that's it.....
