B_D's Brew Day 16_03_07

Post by bitter_dave » Fri Mar 16, 2007 10:19 am

Woke up this morning and decided to brew. I've come up with the following recipe based on Mitchell's Original Bitter, which I've never had, from ingredients listed in the holy Almanac 8) . Am probably using more late hops than the original though.

4kg Pale malt
0.21 Kg Crystal

60 gm Progress, 90 mins (6 AAUs) = approx 31 IBUs
15 gm Styrian Goldings, 20 mins (4 AAUs) = approx 1 IBU.
20 gm Styrian Goldings, steeped for 20 mins.

S04 Yeast

Using CRS and DLS.

23 Ltrs, 32 IBUs, 1038 (based on 70% efficiency, but may go higher).

Ok, I'm off to clean everything; apologies for all the acronyms

You should have a dedicated brew camera.

Thanks for the offer

I try and brew when my girlfriend is not around, so she doesn't come into the kitchen asking about lunch/dinner etc at critical moments  , but this means she can't tell me where the camera is :(

Would that be Mitchell's of Lancaster.

Mitchell's Original was a good classic bitter, nice and hoppy with a good colour.

For many years Mitchell's beers were often quite ropy and inconsistent until the last few years before they closed the brewery in approx 2000. They had employed a new brewer who produced good consitent beers and lots of good specials, but the damage had been done and they couldn't escape their history, so never really achieved good sales. They're just another pubco now and the best ales they regularly sell are supplied by Everards.

Lancaster Bomber is now another indifferent beer from Thwaites and brewed in Blackburn. IMHO I haven't had a decent pint of Thwaites since the 80's, I wouldn't drink it at all but they are very big around here and have a local monopoly in Arnside.
Brewing in the badlands between Arnside and Milnthorpe.

Sad story Charlie :( , although not untypical it seems. We had a large brewery in Sussex called King and Barnes (perhaps you've heard of it), anyway they were bought out by Badger, who promtly closed it down and made the beers themselves :( People talk highly of K&B Sussex Bitter, but the stuff I've had from the badger brewery (Sussex Bitter brewed in Dorset ](*,) ) is bland crap; I've never had the original though :( DL has a recipe, perhaps I'll have a go sometime. Anyway, enough waffling  What was Lancaster Bomber like when it was made by Mitchells? I've got a recipe I may try out sometime.
