Update on Porter/Stout Brew

Post by louthepoo » Wed Mar 28, 2007 9:55 am

Just an update on the London porter i brewed 18/02/07.

As you know i didnt have any brown malt, only black so that changed it from a porter to a stout type brew, i had to grind my chocolate malt up with the back of a hammer in a saucepan as it came whole, i had different yeast.....all in all it was a different brew than the recipe i chose :?

Wasn't sure on the outcome, had my concerns.
I gave around a dozen bottles away for friends (real ale drinkers) to try, they all tried it and couldn't believe i'd brewed it myself, most of them commenting on its chocolate taste, even their wives/girlfriends liked it!!

I've even had 2 of them offering to BUY some of me if i make any more!!

I know it sounds like i'm blowing my own trumpet but i didnt even know i had a trumpet! (blackadder  ) If my brewing carries on like this i'll be delighted! God bless AG brewing :D

By the way i was going to call it 'Toecurler' but now i've changed it to the unoriginal 'Chocolate Stout' Labels are being produced :D

thanks for all those that offered advice on this brew, LTP

Good work there Mr ThePoo! :D

Sounds like you've really scored a winner with that.
I can't wait to be where you are now, brewing knockout beers.

Thats only my second proper AG brew, i'm quite shocked it turned out that good to be honest, hope this next one thats fermenting nicely doesn't bring it back down to earth with a bump!

Adding the campden tablet to the water before mashing took out the funny taste i had with previous brews.

Congratulations. It's great that your beer has turned out so good.

"Give a man a beer and he'll waste an afternoon. Teach him to brew and he'll waste a lifetime".

Don't know where that's from or who qouted it , but it's certainly true.
Just ask my Wife. :bonk

I couldn't put it better myself, I am pleased for you that your ag brews turned out well & it is nice to get an honest opinion on it from your friends.

No turning back now, welcome to the dark side! 8)

Nice one :) it's a great feeling when you taste your first successful AG brew (which is also usually the first one)

One little thing, certainly with roast barley and black malt, these can be used whole in the mash tun as roasting to that degree makes the husk permeable to liquor. The flavour extracted is said to be finer than with crushed. I made a stout with whole roasted barley and it came out just fine :) Wether this also applies to chocolate malt, I don't know.

Sounds great. Congratulations.

Im not sure that switching from Brown malt to Black (patent?) necasarily changes your beer to a stout however.

Modern view (beer comp style guidelines) would be that Roast Barley is the defining grain, traditionaly we would be looking perhaps at comparitive gravity as a definer.
