camden tablets

Post by far9410 » Tue Feb 15, 2011 6:05 pm

Hi all
is there a need to use camden tablets if all liquor is to be boiled, as my understanding is that chlorine is removed by boiling, am I wrong or is there another reason.

sorry for going back to basics. ( you'll all be bored with me soon as I intend to go all grain and I've got so many questions!)
no palate, no patience.

There is still a need for Campden tabs (or, better still - from a price perspective - powdered Sodium Metabisulphate) for removing chloramines.

+1 A lot of the older books and so on were written when chlorine was the thing and boiling was a solution to it, but apparently its ineffective against the more modern replacements. I don't actually know if anywhere still uses just chlorine or if its all chloramines now, but metabisulphate or campden tablets treat either/both cheaply, quickly and easily so I've not needed to find out.

Cheers

I actually have no idea how the tablets work, but I can taste the effects of when I forget to use them.
