Brewed a Czech pils Sunday morning, my last lager of the season. The malt was Weyermann's Bohemian Pils which is supposed to be made from Czech barley. The wort was super sweet and looked great so I am optomistic about the beer.

I use a converted picnic cooler (cool box?) for my mash/lauter tun. It does not have a marked size but I'm guessing it's about 45 litres in capacity. You do, however, need a separate decoction vessel for the boil for which I use a 20 litre stainless steel stockpot. For my usual 10 gallon (38 litre) batch the mash tun has room to spare. I prefer a thick mash for the decoctions and infusions for that matter using a 1qt:1lb water/grain ratio (2L:1Kg). This thick mash takes up less space than a typical thinner infusion mash. If necessary I could probably do another 50% grist for a larger batch or really big beer. The decoction pull fills the stockpot a bit beyond halfway. Yes, CaraFoam is just the Weyermann Co. name for their dextrin malt. Cheers!Frothy wrote:Immense - copied & saved thankyou. I'm intrigued by decoction, do you need a very big mash tun to do it all in Ed'? Carapils & Carafoam are the same thing right?
