Weekend Brew

Post by PieOPah » Wed Apr 11, 2007 8:30 am

I have told SWMBO that I will be brewing this weekend. All I need to do is work out what.

I haven't any liquid yeast so I'll be using 'Muntons Premium Gold' which I like.

I can't remember what hops I have which is a damn shame.

I do know that I have plenty of Marris Otter though :)

I was thinking of something along the lines of

4.5 kg Maris Otter
250.0 g British Crystal
800 g Cherries (frozen) - added dry to secondary fermenter
20 g Willamette (5.0%) - added during boil, boiled 60 min
10 g Willamette (5.0%) - added during boil, boiled 30 min
10 g Willamette (5.0%) - added during boil, boiled 10 min

Hopefully the cherries will give a nice red colour with only a hint of flavour (don't want this to be over powering just very subtle). I am after a nice summer drink that'll go down well at a BBQ.....

You need a lot of cherries to get the full Kriek flavour - IIRC about a pound a gallon - so with 800g in a batch it should be fairly lightly cherryfied

Hope all goes well...let us know how the element holds up 8)
This is going to be my summer beer for when we have people visiting and eating our BBQ's. I thought it should be a nice easy drink that you can have a few of without being on your back. Plus I wanted to try brewing a beer that my element could cope with :D

I'm shooting for 1.046 this will give me an ABV of around 4.5% This will obviously increase with the addition of the cherries but I should be able to work that out with my refractometer.
