Bosun Best Bitter 20/05/2007

Post by Vossy1 » Sat May 19, 2007 11:41 pm

Ah, Sunday brewing, can't beat it 8)

Tomorrows brew Bosun's Best Bitter from M. Ollosson's Real ales for the home brewer.

Assumed efficiency 81%

Marris Otter 9.12kg
Crystal Malt 0.74kg
EKG 179g (bittering)
EKG 75g (aroma last 15 min)
Irish Moss 10g (last 15min)

EKG 75g (dry hops in cask)

Mash temp 65 deg c
Mash time 90 min
Boil time 120 min
Target volume 46ltr

Target OG 1047
Target FG 1011

This will be the first time I've dry hopped and recirculated chilled wort back to the copper to reduce cold break in the fv.

Not a bad idea Wez  , hope all goes well with your brew.

I've scaled my efficiency to 81% using Beersmith for this brew as I overshot on the last brew based on 80%.

I've had a look but, is there a way of calculating efficiency on Beersmith to save me from guessing :?:

I think if you click on the 'brewhouse efficiency' button you can figure it out there...is that what you mean? :?:

I was working on 80% efficiency on my last brew.
I wanted 1038 OG but got 1040 (uber efficient  )
I know how to work out the efficiency is on here somewhere, but I cant find it

Beersmith does it. Put in your actual OG in the measured OG bit and then click on brewhouse efficiency - try that!

All done by 430pm, 46ltrs in the fv 8)
Nothing spectacular to report.

Today I tried recirculating the cooled wort back into the copper to cool the batch down. It took 26 minutes to cool 56ltr volume from 95 to 20 deg c.

I've got to admit that I was watching for fruit flies and dust dropping into the copper all the time it was cooling, something I dont do when cooling straight to fv.

The speed of the recirc led to the hops being dragged up from the botton of the copper so I guess the whole point of the exercise was a bit lost, as the hop bed wont have had the chance to act as a filter for the cold break.

I'll give this some thought for the next brew

Forgot to add that I scaled this recipe to 81% efficiency aiming at a OG of 1047.

I got an OG of 1048 and this time I stopped sparging at 1012 instead of the usual 1010 so all in all quite happy 8)

7 days in primary and tested the gravity tonight @ 1006.
Was aiming for 1011. It's got quite a hoppy aroma, at the moment quite bitter according to 'she that has no name', but it's showing all the qualities of a very quaffable ale at the mo 8)
Lots of citrus notes....just as I like it 8), and not a styrian for miles

Thanks M.Ollosson.....thanks a lot 8)

This ales been in secondary since the 2nd of June and tonight I ran out of shop bought beer......only one thing for it

Now on pint #5  ....it's as smooth as the Thorshead I recently sampled from the trial jar.

If you want a beer that's plenty drinkable 20 days after brewing then you can't go wrong with this one

Ha ha ha ha Now that's hardcore Vossy!

It seems to be something of a mantra round here but "If it tastes good sup it!"
