1st 10 gallon brewday

Post by delboy » Sun Jun 03, 2007 10:19 am

Im about to head down stairs and get the boiler on the go. I have a work buddy come over who is interested in HB. Thought it best to cut to the chase and let him see an AG batch being made, while sampling a few. So i hit on the idea of making up a 10G batch, 5 for me and 5 for him to take home and ferment.

Anyway here it is.

Lager malt 8 Kg
Vienna Malt 0.5 Kg
Wheat Malt 0.5 Kg

65-66C infusion 75 mins
90 min boil

Cascades 6.8 AA 160g at 15 mins.
Cascades 6.8 AA 40g at flameout.

Nottingham yeast.

Well done DB. I have to ask, how is your workmate going to get 5 gals of wort home?

5 gal of homebrew - that is a nice introduction to the obsession!

He bought himself one of those 5G fermentors with the screw down lid and hole for a bung and airlock that the fruit squeezers use for wine and the likes, its was sitting in the front foot well of the car with the seat pushed up against it to hold it in place.
I suppose if it got splashed about on the way home its just more aeration for the yeasties :D

Mysterio thanks for the tip about cutting more slits in the hop strainer, 200g of cascades in the boiler and it never missed a beat :D

Amazing, glad to hear we're going to have a convert and sounds like a great beer!

I'm itching to get my kilo of Cascades going on a beer now
