efficiency, how to calculate

After reading a previous post, and several other threads on the forum, I notice a lot is amde of efficiency.Can anyone point in the right direction as to where to find out how to calculate it.If I am going to the time, trouble and expense of brewing my own beer, I'd like to have as many things in my favour as possible to brew the best I can.Is there a book anyone can recommend, or is there somewhere on this site with the info?
