For my next brew im going to have a stab at either a newkie brown or a hobgoblin clone.
I don't know why i haven't done one of these yets since i pretty much started all grain brewing so i could produce something as good as newkie brown (some will say its v. average but i certainly like it). I guess i was like a kid in a sweet shop wanting to try as may differnet styles as possible.

I have a few bottles of goblin and newkie sitting at home waiting for tonights BBQ (we are getting great weather for once :D) and i'll decide which one im going to brew on the basis of how well they go down tonight.

If its goblin then im going to use either Orfys or EB recipe.
If its the newkie that wins out does anyone have a top notch recipe for it that they would like to share, its either that or use the reciple in the brew clone book.
Any recipes will be greatly appreciated :D

Only got the clone from Dave Line. If you want that I could always copy it out for you....

EB's recipe for HG is excellent, both my batches have turned out 'as good as the real thing', they taste great on handpull and from the bottle

What did you decide on then Del? The rich dark hobgoblin wins hands down over brown ale any day of the week in my book. All I seem to taste with Newcastle Brown is bananas - weird and I was practically weaned on the stuff!

Well the hobgoblin won out on the tasting test, but swmbo liked the newkie better, so its the newkie for the next batch :oops: .
But im also going to knock out the hobgoblin as well the very next opportunity i get :D

I made a northern style brown ale for my first AG brew and was very pleased with it. Much to my surprise it came second in the speciality beer class at last November's Sutton CBA festival. I'm at work at the moment but will post the recipe this evening if your interested.

'Practically Mashed' Northern Brown Ale

(Named after Richard Burns from Cheers homebrew in Cheam's 'Practical Mashing' day course).

4.1 kg Optic pale malt
480g crystal
140g chocolate malt

Mashed for 75 mind at 152 F

My efficiency was a bit awry, I was aiming for an OG of 1048 and got it but didn't get as much wort as I was expecting, so you may need to adjust the quantities but the propotions should be good.

Hops -

50g cascade at 4.8% for 60 mins
40g cascade for 15 mins

Promash made that 28 IBUs

75 minute boil

I used White Labs Burton ale yeast

I'd be really interested to hear what you end up brewing - Northern Brown Ale is a bit of a rarity, but I really like the style.
