I blame Colin for this - his brew night looked a lot of fun and I am sure I heard my son cough earlier :^o . Well its not totally Colins fault, sitting watching Relocation Relocation with my wife also made me think that I could be doing something better with my time.

I have been toying with making an old fashioned IPA for a while but as I am doing this a bit on the lurch I will use some of the grains I have available and see how I get on. I only have 5.250kg of crushed pale malt so I am forced to use that as my base.

I have seen a couple of recipes for Amerillo IPA that I thought looked interesting but after talking to a couple of brewers and doing a bit of reading I thought I would combine it with Fuggles and see how I get on. Hence, Fugerillo IPA was born.

My plan is to brew a fairly strong IPA in the 5.6 abv range. Make it fairly well hopped, leave it to condition IPA style over the summer in an old plastic Boots barrel (it is a very consistent barrel), bottle in September/October so that it is ready for Christmas and beyond.

At 70% efficiency I am hoping for OG of 1057 and a racking of 1014 giving an ABV of 5.6%

IBU will be around 80 but I only 61 of those come from the copper hops, the rest are aroma so I expect it will not be too harsh given the aging process.

It is going to be a long day at work as I cannot wait to get going.

I've just brewed my panhandle bitter and couldn't find any Amarillo recipes so came up with one of my own, it's the first time I have used them.

What were the other recipes? What did the other brewers and books say to make you combine it with fuggles?

Sorry for the interrogation, I had Crouch Vale 'Amarillo' and Roosters 'Outlaw Amarillo' recently which inspired me to get the hops, but as I have said have drawn a blank regarding recipes. :roll:

Looks good Calum. It will be interesting to see if the Fuggles come through with all that Amarillo. I also bet that the US-05 will drop it below 1.014, that yeast is a real workhorse.

I have never used Amerillo before but I thought I would pick some up with the intention of making a single varietal brew and try it out. I subsequently found an Amerillo IPA recipe on a US forum but one of the criticisms was that it was a bit one dimensional and perhaps could have been better as with a blend of hops. Discussions with other more experienced brewers gave me the same impression. This left me with a decision to make given the taste profile I was looking at and also the fact that I have just bought 400g of Fuggles from The Reaper :lol: . Seriously, I like to get heavy handed with aroma additions of Fuggles and Styrians when I am making pale ales so I do not see it as a gamble but it is an experiment.
I also bet that the US-05 will drop it below 1.014, that yeast is a real workhorse.
This is another new feature of this brew as I have never used US-05 before. My homemade spreadsheet simply estimates a 75% attenuation, however, I'm not being too scientific and will be happy to accept the outcome if it goes lower.

Cheers calum, not sure what a one dimensional beer tastes like but I suppose the Americans do :=P :lol:

As it's been quite warm I have kept mine in a closed up cool room, when I went in there to check during the first days of primary the room was filled with a spicy fruit salad aroma, if it tastes as good as the smell I will be using them again 8)

I never managed to update last night but overall the brew went smoothly. However, I ended up with a smaler batch than I had expected. On retrospect I should probably have built in a bit more tolerance for the amount of liquid lost. A couple of notes on the lost liquid:

1, My 8.8kw/hr gas ring is very hot but about as subtle as a punch in the face. I can turn the heat down a bit but even then I lost around 20% in the hour (I have cut down to a 60 minute boil).

2, As I used 200g of hops the amount lost to the hops was more than I expected. There was a good layer of about 10cm at the bottom of the boiler after run off. :o

In the end the efficiency was around 65% which wasn't great but then again I'm not an accountant and as long as the final product is good and I enjoy it I would have no hesitation in doing it the same way again. :)
