pH stabilizer -DO NOT TAKE INTERNALLY!!!

Post by andypettitt62 » Fri Jun 15, 2007 6:42 pm

I have just bought some5.2pH satbilizer, and worryingly on the label it says "do not take internally", and"if ingested induce vomiting".As Laurence Olivier once said, "is it safe?".It has to be added to the mash, does it become neutralised, and is it really necessary? I have also bought some CRS, is this better.Hoping to brew some Pen y Bont on Monday.

Any large amount of salt will induce vomiting if taken in one go, it’s just a natural reaction to prevent serious damage to organs. See the latest bond film, he used a similar idea

I wouldn't drink neat CRS either

5.2 is fine used in the recommended dose.

Yeah, CRS, a blend of Sulphuric and Hydrochloric acids. I think 5.2 is a phosphate buffer, so phosphoric acid anyone, like in a can of coke?

CRS gets neutralised by CaHCO3 giving calcium chloride, calcium sulphate, CO2, and water, so not only does it knock out the temporary hardness but you get some beneficial salts into the bargain.

I remember a chemistry teacher at school who demonstrated neutralisation by mixing Hydrochloric acid and Caustic soda (Sodium Hydroxide), and then drinking the resulting mixture in front of shocked pupils.....he was ok, it turns into salty water.

Don't worry, its the lawyers at work, we sometimes have to order highly purified water into work. It comes with a MSDS data sheet that includes such chestnuts as if ingested drink copious amounts of WATER , if in contact with the eyes......you guessed it wash with copious amounts of water etc etc for about 4 pages
They stick the biggest amount of rubbish on the data sheets so there is no come back to them if you decide it is a good idea to spoon 6 or 7 tubs of pH 5.2 into yourself

as always, thanks for the help and peace of mind.I guess as long as you stick to the manufacturers instructions you can't go wrong.Looking forward to a brewday tomorrow trying out my new chemicals, high low alarm thermometer and sparging setup.
