More Dumb Questions

Brace yourselves DUMB QUESTION ALERT

Sorry to use the 'E' word again but I've been looking at my efficiency and have been alarmed to see the figure I've come up with is is an improbable 89%, especially when you consider I am batch sparging. The problem either lies in my maths or equipment or my newbie brewer low efficiency expectations. I wondered if someone could take a look at my maths and technique please and see where I am going wrong or right.

Maths

Today I used 4.56kg of pale malt and 40l of water to produce 25l of wort. So using Jim's recipe formulation pages i worked out the following

4.56 * (300/25) = 54.72 potential gravity points

So if I got 25l of 1.049 wort corrected to 20C that means that I extracted 49 of those gravity points so

49/54.72 = 89.5% efficiency - Is this right?

Equipment
If it helps I am using the lauter tun I made for my mini mash which is 2 10 gallon buckets one inside the other they measure 11 inches wide by 10 inches deep and only seem to have room for about 5-5 litres of liquid when they have 4.5kg grain in them. This fact necessitates that I am forever recirculating running and batch sparging in 4 litre batches. Could this be the cause of the high efficiency reading?

I know it's how good the beer tastes that really matters but it's something I'd really like to understand.

Cheers for your patience

JP

That's brilliant although I did replace the crystal with plain old pale malt in the end as per the recipe.

I was just a little sceptical when I arrived at this figure, it seemed a little high for someone so new to AG brewing using the least efficient method of sparging.

I guess whatever I'm doing in the mash I'll just keep on doing and enjoy the resultant beer.

Thanks Again Daab

You've not seen that one before?

your original (dumb) question (can I have a fag) reminds me of some kids I went to school with who were sniffing gas in a shed and after ever so many cans of gas one of them asked for a light for a cigarette.

They all got seriously burned and the shed sadly didn't make it! Straight up truth!

I am pretty stunned at the 89% figure, I instantly assumed that I'd dropped a b*llock with the calculations as I was really strict with the measuring. It must be something to do with my small lauter tun and having to sparge in small batches. That and the fact I had to allow for a 2hr boil so there was loads more water to sparge with.

Cheers Again

Plenty of sparge water coupled with a 2hr boil is a big help :)
Consistancy is what you really want, so hopefully your great result will continue...

Consistency is indeed the key Ross. I aim to keep everything the same next weekend when I brew up. Aside from the extra hops I threw in the only other variation from the recipe I made was I increased the mash volume from 11l to 13l which gave a more liquid mash which _has_ to improve the efficiency.

Very good extraction JP. I think batch sparging done well can be very efficient. One thing to check, are you sure the 25L is actually 25L? The volume markings on vessels can be quite innaccurate. I calibrate mine - apart from the new FV. I forgot.

I've personally found them to be out by up to 3 ltrs
