Boiling in a flat !!??

Post by fraserjaxx » Sun Aug 05, 2007 5:18 pm

I have been brewing kits for a while now and after lots of research I want to get into all graiin brewing.I live in a flat,I have plenty of room,a big kitchen,an outhouse to store bottles etc (200 conditioning in there already) and a spare room to fill up with junk.I also have a partner who likes making wine so she is understanding of my obsession/hobby,but my only worry is that when I boil my wort it will steam the whole place up so much that the neighbours will complain and the artex will fall off the ceiling and the whole block will smell like a brewery.Obviously I will open my kitchen windows when boiling and shut the door,I will place my boiler near the windows to let the steam out.
How much steam/condensation does the boil give off ? I see pictures on this site of ordinary kitchens (like mine ) with boiling wort so I'm thinking that maybe I am being paranoid but I want to make sure before I splash out on all the gear.

You're not being paranoid

I have an artexed ceiling and during the boil the condensate will drip from the peaks in the artex. I have been known to use a laminate mop (flat mop) to dab the drips of the ceiling.

My main worry which has'nt come true yet, is that the sweet sugary ceiling will become mouldy

Get a flat mop and get on with brewing

Good to see you taking the plunge FJ, I find that if I put my boiler as near to the kitchen door as possible, (the power cables could be slightly longer), then open the sitting room windows, the breeze blows the steam straight out the door, and all my neighbours suddenly think Vaux has re-opened and they are living in the staff car park.

on a similar note, I once got up mega early to do a brew, like 5.30am or something, I had already filled the HLT the night before, so I switched it on and figured it would take about half and hour to get to strike temp, so I went back for a lie down, oops, major mistake, 2 hours later I came down to find the kitchen dripping, and a solid fog about 2 feet from the ceiling right across the room, your hand disappeared if you reached up, it was that thick, I am still finding 'run marks' down the wall to this very day.....hmm won't be doing that again

I thought about that as we already have a tumble dryer and pipe installed ...maybe i can modify it slightly...but I know we will end up with dry clothes that stink of beer :?

Just something to note, old Artex contained grey asbestos.
Tried to chip it off before I was told.
Now all plastered and back to smooth ceilings.

I boil next to the window and put the pedestal fan on blowing it out - well mostly, i've still managed to produce some nice brown streaks down the walls!
