Not sure if this the right place but I will be going to Vancouver next month. Anyone been before and tried the beer,? There's seems to be about 9 breweries in Vancouver but are they any good?
Cheers

I spent quite a miserable few days there once on a business trip. Staying in a hotel, the booze prices were ridiculous and most of the bars had crap beer anyway. You couldn't buy alcohol in any of the shops. They sold beer and wine in the supermarkets, but in an alcohol-free form. It seems you have to go to some sort of regulated off-licence for any type of take-away booze but in central Vancouver without transport and not knowing the layout that wasn't very practical.

...and it pissed it down the whole time, of course.

I did eventually find a small bar with quite decent beer, but I wept at the prices. Maybe it's not so bad outside the centre.

OTOH, I did see some excellent morris dancers (not exactly what I was expecting), which suggests that there probably are good real-ale outlets around somewhere, there being an affinity between the two.

So I think tapping into some local knowledge is probably the key.

pains me to remember how long i stalked the streets looking for a cold bottle of ale to enjoy the sunshine and scenery (it's a lovely place). eventually it dawned on me that alcohol must be somewhat more regulated than over here..

Thanks for the thoughts. Prices I'm prepared for. But is it worth paying? Will have a look at Granville. You lot are the closest I'm going to get to a local. Cheers Wilf

Sounds like you'd be better off heading south to Washington.

No chance of "accidently" booking a flight to the good Vancouver?

I've been ...found the beer pretty good a lot of red ale and malty type beers all on keg but the standard was decent. .don't remember it being to expensive. ..on the other hand it's not a long drive to seattle which has a thriving beer community or a trip to portland would be a visit to remember.

Look out for Red Racer IPA. Pretty much the only world class Canadian IPA.

Several new breweries have opened in Vancouver, WA in the last couple of years. The trip across the river to Portland is an easy bus ride and the two bus companies honor each other's tickets.
