Beer for an 18th Birthday

Post by Alton_Bee » Sun Aug 19, 2007 9:15 am

In a few weeks (Sept 22nd) my nephew is 18 and having a party. For this I have decided to take along a barrel of homebrew.

Due to the lack of time to allow this beer to mature I am going for a Mild in the region of 1.040.

The grain bill I am using is:

Mild Malt 3 kg
Pale Malt 500g
Crystal Malt 250g
Flaked Barley 100g

If this was solely for me I would have this darker but allowing for his age and his preference for lager I am going to do this lighter than I normally would.

With this in mind I am going to use Saaz hops to about 20 IBU

I will be fermenting this beer with Nottingham Yeast.

I plan to have this in primary for a week to 10 days. Once Primary is finished I am going to keg it to allow it time to carbonate.

I wish someone brought me a barrel of beer when I was 18, I could have saved myself around 5 years of drinking swill and got stuck into the real stuff from the outset.

Have a good one AB

Hope it's going well Vic. I'm mid boil now with a standard bitter (1.038 and 30 IBU).

Yes it is for me - the choice was either to brew or buy some commercial stuff.

So I went for doing a brew - Good excuse in my book to do so.

have ended up with about 18 ltrs in the fermenter at 1.042 - giving me 80% effiency so very happy with that.

I used protofloc for the 1st time on this brew and have to say I am impressed with it. Ended up with about 2 ltrs of what I can only guess is cold break - looks like very runny jelly !!!!

You sure about that Vic ? With your recipe above, Beersmith gives 72% efficiency for 20 litres :?
