Wort Cooling Advice

Post by Captain Calamity » Mon Aug 20, 2007 10:47 pm

As this is my first post let me say hello. AG brew number one is anticipated within the next week or so and I will, of course, post some pictures. I hope the end product is as good as I have been lead to expect!

Question regarding wort cooling. My first attempts at making a CFC were a little Heath Robinson, and looked decidely unhygeinic, so I got hold of a plate cooler (they were going "cheap" on Leyland's web site). When tested tonight I was very impressed with the efficiency of the thing when connected to my HLT with only minimal flow on the cooling side.

It occurs to me that when I use the cooler "for real" all the cold break material will end up in whatever container I collect the cooled wort in. I had planned to drizzle the cooled wort straight into the FV (through a seive to aerate) where presumably the cold break material will sink to the bottom. Will this affect the taste of the brew, or does this not matter?

I suppose that I could collect into an intermediate vessel, allow the cold break material to settle, and then decant into the FV - this seems more hassle, and surely increases the chance of infection. Alternatively, I could recirculate the cooled wort back into the boiler, finally draining into the FV when at strike temperature.

What do you all think?

Andy
