If you look in Asian supermarkets you can get Jaggery which is made from cane sugar - Looks like Sainsburys sell it too, 500g for £1.20

Unrefined cane sugar, such as Billington's Golden Granulated, is perfect. Despite what I typed above, it is, in fact, what is generally used to make brewing invert sugars in England. I generally use raw cane sugar in the form of inverted Demerara sugar, which some traditional breweries use in England. If you were planning to use the blackstrap dilution method, I'd say invert some unrefined cane sugar. I haven't used jaggery, but I know home brewers who have got good results using it, but say they prefer Demerara. Something to be aware of is that jaggery's not as fermentable as the other sugars, as it only contains about 50% sucrose.

Billington's Golden Granulated sugar it is then, easy to get in mainstream supermarkets and a track record sounds ideal. Tried jaggery in Sri Lanka and may hunt that down too, our local large Sainsbury's don't have it, but the Asian supermarkets here probably will. Thanks again.
