Anyone tried this? Using your first runnings wort as the liquor for a second mash with new grain?
I'm sure I read somewhere that the practice ("Double Beers") was outlawed in England at some point. Whatever, it's an interesting way to make strong, pale, all-grain beer without running the risk of a stuck mash by using too much grain.

Re: Reiterated or double/triple mash
It's a interesting article and double mashes is something I've heard of being done in braumeisters to get higher gravitates but I've yet to try it. It's on the to-do list though. With regard to the water treatment and ph I wonder if it would be worth putting all the dark grains (if using them) in the first mash to lower the Ph for the second mash of all pale malt
Re: Reiterated or double/triple mash
I brew using BIAB and had been toying with the idea of making a barley wine but there is no way i could fit the grain bill into my boiler, this could be the ideal solution.
Re: Reiterated or double/triple mash
I do it regularly with my BM. It works a treat.smbenn wrote:https://byo.com/bock/item/1317-reiterat ... sive-brews

Re: Reiterated or double/triple mash
I did it once. Manged to get a high gravity but the run off was painfully slow.

I used it to make a 1103 Og Ris in my BM.

Re: Reiterated or double/triple mash
Cool, glad to see some people have tried it. The description in BYO seems a bit of a faff so what would happen if I just did a normal mash with sparge, then used hot wort as liquor for second mash? Think I'll need to do some sums here ... Just trying to keep it as simple as possible!
