Desiccated or non-desiccated should both work okay if they're the larger chunks, that's the issue I had a problem with as the tiny pieces do tend to clog things up.sbond10 wrote:Rookie wrote:Not necessarily. Dried fruit often has more concentrated flavor. Split a batch and use some in half of it and non-desiccated on the other and see if there's a difference.sbond10 wrote:So basically desicated are out then ?
I mean for clogging up filters sounded like you had issues

I'm just here for the beer.

There is a gold medal winning recipe in a 1998 issue of 'Zymurgy' for a toasted coconut porter which calls for "shredded coconut, toasted (in secondary)". For a 9.5 litre brew, it uses 200g

Re: Coconut- chips or desicated
I bottled my coconut stout yesterday and on initial tasting prior to bottling, it tasted pretty good. I toasted coconut flakes/chips then placed in a muslin bag in the FV for 4 days used around 275g next time I will use more and maybe some in the boil then dry hop after fermentation. I bought the desiccated then thought about it and chose to use flakes/chips due potential blockages and stray particles floating about in my brew. Hope that helps in any way?!

I found Holland n barrett do the chips for 2.75 for over 200g.
I'll be using close to hundred grams in the mash boil and fv
The next question is this is gonna be a Christmas beer at 6.5% is it too early to put it on now

When would you wait until September I need to get 4 or 5 brews ready for December the 1st
Re: Coconut- chips or desicated
I hate coconut in cakes but love it in curry and naans. I think the former is dessicated. I wouldn't risk it in beer.

How often do you brew? If once a month, like me, September would be too late.sbond10 wrote:When would you wait until September I need to get 4 or 5 brews ready for December the 1st

Sounds like you should start early July, maybe mid June.sbond10 wrote:Rookie wrote:How often do you brew? If once a month, like me, September would be too late.sbond10 wrote:When would you wait until September I need to get 4 or 5 brews ready for December the 1st
