Coconut- chips or desicated
Following on from a brief chat about coconuts in the extract forum. I just wondered everyone's opinions on which was better. Coconut chips or desicated ?
They both have there pros and cons, Im planning on toasting mine which ever I choose.
Coconut chips
Pros easier to handle, won't cause filtration issues can be dumped straight into the fermenter can be bought pre toasted
Cons higher cost due to pnp less surface area toasted ones might have sugar on um.
Desicated
Pros cheaper smaller pieces so more able to contact the wort and beer in fv. Organic varities contain no preservatives.
Cons may cause filtration issues when both emptying boiler and fv. May turn to a mush in kettle. More oils could leech out
Any one else got any thoughts on using coconut in beer

sbond,
You could try this as a back-up........
http://www.lakeland.co.uk/18349/Natural ... ml-Coconut
Pinto suggested these when I messed up my Wheat Beer, I used an oil based essence, not a spirit based essence.
You could use this as an addition if the flakes don`t give enough flavour/aroma.

It goes very well in a wheat beer. Later this month I'm going to do a coconut cider.barneey wrote:Don't take this the wrong way but coconut

Re: Coconut- chips or desicated
There's a grocery near my house that sells them (unsweetened) in larger pieces than the tiny flakes that most stores carry. I learned the hard way that the tiny flakes are a bitch to strain out when it's bottling time.sbond10 wrote:Rookie wrote:It goes very well in a wheat beer. For cider and wheat beer I don't toast the coconut.
It can be a bit subtle so have enough to add more if the first dose doesn't give you the level of coconutness that you want.
I'm just here for the beer.

Not necessarily. Dried fruit often has more concentrated flavor. Split a batch and use some in half of it and non-desiccated on the other and see if there's a difference.sbond10 wrote:So basically desicated are out then ?
