BrewMate update
BrewMate update
Not sure if I'm the last person on the planet still using BrewMate software. I think it's been obsolete/unsupported/unavailable for a while, but I still have it on my PC. It has started asking if I want to update it in a warning window now, when it fires up, but the text that comes up is a load of gobbledygook, so I just click 'no'. Anyone know anything about this?

Don't know anything about BrewMate but I would suggest that it might be a good idea to run a virus check before you do anything else.
Re: BrewMate update
I think Brewers friend or something took over Brew mate. I would just ignore updates because, as you say, it is no longer supported.

Re: BrewMate update
Brewmate was(& still is) a good program, everything went South once Brewers Friend took it over.

Re: BrewMate update
Just turn off checking for automatic updates and it goes away.
Looks like the brewmate.net website has changed hands and now belongs to a Finnish student, which is where BrewMate checks for updates, gets the wrong data, and shows it to you.

Ok, thanks. I will definitely just keep it as it is!

Great tip TonySan, have turned off the automatic updates and all is fine again.
Brewmate has proven to be an excellent program: free and easy to work!

Yes, nice one. I got rid of the 'splash screen' option at the same time, which makes it load up slightly faster.jimbothenav wrote:Great tip TonySan, have turned off the automatic updates and all is fine again.

Re: BrewMate update
I believe it's now operating under the Brewer's Friend banner now.
Re: BrewMate update
Well, just downloaded and tried out the re-badged version.
Overall, the core mechanics of the program haven't really been changed, apart from the useful ? addition of estimated different attenuation rates for different yeasts, as they were all set to 75% previously. A good number of grains and hops have been added, but you have always been able to add and change these yourself anyway along with anything else that is in the drop down boxes.
There are 6 new 'Tools' added, but of the two I would be interested in , the water chemistry calculator on this site is far better, and the yeast pitch rate is directly from somewhere on the web, although I can't remember where just now. None of the calculators take the current recipe as inputs, but neither did the original ones.
It also loads saved recipes from the BrewMate version.
Apart from having the yeast pitch rate calculator handy rather than trying to find it on the odd occasion I brew a beer that doesn't just take a packet of dried or a While Labs vial directly, the only reason for me to switch is to see what updates are coming in the future, and maybe to suggest to the new owner that importing the current brew into the tools would be useful.

Re: BrewMate update
Beersmith usually has a January sale, keep an eye out, still the best around, even with the $/£ as it is I think it's still good value at £22.75 ish.
