Pure hop aroma oils

Post by guypettigrew » Mon Nov 28, 2016 2:55 pm

The malt Miller sells a small, but intriguing, range of hop oils to add directly to the finished beer. Has anyone tried them and, if you have, what do you think?

Thanks.

I love the Oil. I've used the Cascade many times. I wont be dry hopping again, its so much easier and the end result is imo much better.
I use them in corny's. I wait until im soon to be ready to start drinking from a corny, then i de gas and add 2ml of Oil. Re gas and put in my kegerator.
I also have Nelson and Citra and will be using then soon.

15ml seems quite reasonable for 4 quid! I'm intrigued.

Much better than dry hopping. Last weekend I took it a step further. Large vodka and tonic and one drop of hop oil in place of a slice of lemon. Absolute heaven

Thanks all. I'll be ordering from The Malt Miller in the next day or so and will add a couple of the oils to the order.

What sort of hop weight equivalent to 1ml of oil is it would you say roughly ?

I've been tempted by these in the past

Sounds tempting too but £6 to ship a little pot I dont think I'll bother. Makes sense to add to a big order though.

It would just be standard postage though, not by courier.

Nope unless cause I added some bottle caps that changed the postage. I was only thinking of getting them to try so its no bother.

Yeah I think that would as it would take it over 600g. Its still £3 for 1st class so agree it doesn't make much sense to pay that for a £4 bottle.

Quite tempted to try these oils out, particularly the Citra & Nelson ones are love using those as dry hops. If these work out that would be ideal.

One thing that I really love about using hop oil is,
Hop aroma can reduce over time, But you also need some time to condition a beer.
So, by waiting until a beer has conditioned, then add hop oil , you get conditioned beer with hop aroma.
Also you can add a little oil, drink some to test, then add more if needed, until it has the amount of aroma you like.

How many ml's do you tend to use? Understand that people have different tastes but if for example I usually drop 100g for a Corny sized brew, what does that roughly equate to if you know?

Hi Rhodesy

The recommended starting dose is 1ml per 10L.
I use 2ml per corny with about 18L ale. I find this ok for me.
If you try 1ml pr 10l, taste it, add more etc until you have what you want.
Then next time you'll know what dose to use.

I suspect you will find you get great aroma and a lot less faffing about.
It cost me about 50p per corny.

It's difficult for me too judge how this will compare to you using 100g, But I think you will be surprised how little hop oil is needed.
